She is wearing real tulle. He is wearing a tuxedo. A dove flies above them carrying two interlocked rings. Seventy years later, they are still standing.

This mid-century Wilton bride and groom cake topper is the real thing — hand-painted celluloid figures with the kind of delicate detail that simply cannot be replicated today. The faces are hand-painted with fine brushwork. The bride's dress and veil are real tulle, still intact and soft after all these decades. The lace-heart base — lightweight celluloid — is marked on the bottom: Wilton, Woodridge, IL, Hong Kong, 20 I 7846.

The base shows some discoloration — the front is darker than the back, the natural patina of a piece with a long and presumably happy history. For those who know, this can be gently restored with hydrogen peroxide — but it is equally beautiful as it is, wearing its age with the dignity of something that has already done its job beautifully.

The perfect Something Old for a bride who loves the romance of mid-century aesthetics. Equally wonderful as a bridal shower display piece, a collectible for the cake topper enthusiast, or a charming addition to a vintage wedding or romance-themed vignette.

Wilton Enterprises was founded in 1929 in Chicago by Dewey McKinley Wilton, who began teaching cake decorating classes and selling supplies out of his home. The company grew into one of America's most beloved baking and cake decorating brands, producing everything from decorating tools and fondant to the iconic cake toppers that graced millions of American wedding cakes through the mid-20th century. Their vintage toppers from the 1950s and 1960s are now highly collectible.
